So many movie posters

The Internet Movie Poster Awards site isn’t much to look at, but its content is awesome. Got a favorite movie poster? It’s probably there—along with a ton of others you didn’t know were your favorite until now.

It’s interesting when a sorry movie has a really sweet poster and a good movie has a horrible one, and it’s even better when a really bad movie has a poster that’s so bad it’s good.

Go there, now!

Mechanical objects in a digital world

I’m really fascinated with these types of objects. Daniel Rozin creates, among other things, mechanical mirrors. Although he uses video cameras and computers, the end product is created by a mechanical process (moving disks, wood, pieces of trash, etc.). You can read a little more about them on his site. The trash mirror, although not very detailed, is lovely. Quite an amazing project.

I have also coveted this analog/digital clock for some time now:

I once saw a museum exhibit at BYU that explored how, quite often, new technology is cloaked in an old and familiar presentation in the hope that people will be more willing to accept it. It could be new yet still seem familiar. The interesting thing about objects like those above is that they do the opposite. The clock is an especially good example of (what I assume to be) a completely mechanical process cloaked in a digital facade. Or in the case of the mirrors, what a viewer might well assume to be a video display (albeit at very low resolution) is actually produced mechanically.

Hypnotic Octopus Project

This video for the Octopus Project by Double Triple and Ryan Junell is just crazy cool and hypnotic. I couldn’t look away—even at the threat of possible seizures. I grew up as an early part of the whole “MTV generation” and know people bemoaned the short attention spans brought on by all those quick-cutting music videos. But it’s not always about creating a traditional cinematic narrative. Sometimes, it’s nice to just enjoy the color and image of a moving and living piece of art.

Design Ignites Change

Saw this at I Love Typography. An amazing laser-cut poster by Marian Bantjes. You can see and read a little more about it on her site. I really love the pic of the cast “light shadow.” Beautiful.

Feelings

My son was not happy that my wife and I made him clean his room this weekend. Though I don’t condone writing on the walls, I will give him credit for artistically expressing himself. I just wish it was on paper. My wife told him he shouldn’t write on the walls, and he said, “but that’s how I feel.” After the over-emotional ordeal of getting a child to clean his room, I think that’s how we felt, too.

From the Olympics

Some beautiful pictures from the Olympic opening ceremonies. Sort of a people version of the Large Hadron Collider.

Certain death looks pretty cool

Many believe that the Large Hadron Collider will create a black hole that will destroy the world. But it looks pretty awesome. Who figured out where all those wires are supposed to go?

A full plate

I recently had to get new license plates here in Utah. I’ve been disappointed by the available choices. It seems like license plate designs are closing in on the craziness of that stop sign video that’s been making the rounds lately (for some reason it has been taken down from youtube). Poke around a bit here, and you’ll find plenty of screen-printed madness. I thought the purpose of a license plate is to clearly identify individual vehicles. But still, how cool is this?

Is simplicity too much to ask for?
